How do I set up segments?

In this article, we will walk through step by step how to set up Segment within Rule. Segment is a tool for creating selections of your customers, so Segment is a way to further divide your customers. For example, you can segment your members who have made more than 3 purchases, above a certain order value, and create communications that are more relevant to them. Or if you have customers with the membership field "City", you can create a filter on "City = Gothenburg". In this way, all members who have Gothenburg as their city are segmented out of the list.

Before you create segments, we recommend that you understand the following:

  1. Subscriber fields, what are they?
  2. Examples of segments, to understand how you can use segments in different ways.

Create Segment

  1. Click on 'Subscribers'
  2. Then on 'Segment'

Then click on "+ New segment" in the top right corner.

  1. Name your 'Segment'

  2. Describe what your segment should do. This is not mandatory, but we recommend doing it for clarity and structure, especially if there are multiple people using the account.

  3. Select which 'Tags' this segment should be based on.

  4. Choose 'Regular segment' or 'Combined segment'. If you want to know what the difference is, you can read more about it here!

  5. Create

Next step: set rules for your segment

  1. Choose whether you want the rule to match "All" or match "Any". Match "Any" = one or more rules must match the member to be included in the segment. Match "All" = the segment retrieves values that match all the criteria. That is, all rules must match the member to be included in the segment.
  2. Select a "field"; there will be various options available. Choose the one that fits the rule you want to set for the segment.
  3. Select an "operator"; it will automatically show different options you can choose from. In this example, we could choose "equals" or "does not equal".
  4. In this example, we are segmenting by language, so in this field, you will select which language you want to segment by.
  5. You have the option to add multiple rules to the same segment; to do this, click on "+ New rule".
  6. Here, you can choose whether you want to include "Historical data" in your segment. For example, if you want to set up a segment to identify members who have made more than 3 orders, you need to check "Historical data".
  7. There are different options to set up rules after you've chosen to include "Historical data"; select the ones that fit the segment you are creating.
  8. Save
