Examples of Segments

In this article, we will go through different examples of how you can use segments so that you can easily apply it in your own business, provided you have the same member data.

To start with, it may be useful to know what the following are:

  1. How to create a segment?

We will go through the following:

  1. Segment events between different dates
  2. Segment on activity
  3. Segment in different languages
  4. Segment on Opened/Clicked Campaign, Automation or Journey.
  5. Segment by number of orders
  6. Segment by amount limit
  7. Segment by number of purchases in a given time
  8. Segment on combined amount from or to a date

Step 1

  1. Click on "Members"
  2. Then on "Segment"

Then click on "+ New segment" in the top right corner

  1. Name your "Segment"
  2. Describe what your segment should do, this is not mandatory, but we recommend doing it to have clarity and structure if there are several people in the account. 
  3. Choose which "Tags" this segment should be based on
  4. Choose "Regular segment" or "Combined segment", if you want to know what the difference is, you can read more about it here!
  5. Create

Step 2

1. Segment events between different dates

In this segment we collect the customers who have placed an order between the current dates, 2023-02-13 - 2023-02-28 as shown in the example below. Once the segment is created, you can add it to your Campaign, Automation or Journey. 

Do step 1 above in the document

  1. Match "All"
  2. In the first field you select "Date", in the middle field "is greater than or equal to", and in the last field you select the start date of this segment.
  3. Then you want to add a "+ New Rule"
  4. In the first field, select "Date" again, in the middle field "is less than or equal to", and then select your end date.
  5. Then click on "Save and Sync"


2. Segment on activity

With activity means when a customer/member has either opened or clicked on a campaign. The segment captures customers with activity from 365 days and back. It is then dynamically controlled after +365 days of inactivity per respective customer. Once the segment is created, you can add it to your Campaign, Automation or Journey. 

Do step 1 first, located above in the document.

  1. Match "All"
  2. In the first field select "Activity", in the middle field "least days ago", in the last field enter the number of days. 
  3. Click "Save and Sync"

3. Segment by language

Here we go through whether you want to segment your members if, for example, you are an international company and need to send out communication in different languages. In this example, we segmented on Swedish-speaking customers. Once the segment is created, you can add it to your Campaign, Automation or Journey. 

Do step 1 first, located above in the document.

  1. Match "All"
  2. In the first field, select "Language" as this is what we will filter on. In the middle field, select "Equal to". In the last field you choose which language you want to sort out, in this case we chose Swedish.
  3. Save and sync


4. Segment on Opened/Clicked Campaign, Automation and Journey.

By creating segments based on members' activities, you can personalize emails based on their willingness to open or the type of links they have clicked on. This improves segmentation capabilities and provides the basis for more effective mailings and well-targeted messages. 

Do step 1 first, located above in the document.

  1. Match "All"
  2. In the first field, select either Campaign, Automation or Journey. In the next field you choose which Campaign, Automation or Journey you want to segment on. Then you choose the rule whether the member has or has not "opened" or "not opened" the email, and in the last field you choose the number of days.
  3. Save and sync

5. Segment by number of orders

In this example, we will show you how to segment the members who have placed between two and five orders on your e-commerce site. If you want to set up this segment, you can of course choose the number of orders to any number you want. Once the segment is created, you can add it to your Campaign, Automation or Journey. 

Do step 1 first which is at the top of the document. Select the tag OrderCompleted or whatever you call that tag.

  1. Match "All"
  2. Click in "Historical data"
  3. Click on "+ New number"
  4. In the first field you select "OrderNumber", in the middle field "is greater than or equal to", and in the last field you select the first number of words you want to segment on, which in this case is 2.
  5. Click "+ New rule"
  6. In the first field you select "OrderNumber", in the middle field "is less than or equal to", and in the last field you select the maximum number of words you want to segment on, which in this case is 5.
  7. Save and sync

6. Segment by amount limit

In this example, we will show how to segment out the members who have made more orders that are above 500kr. If you want to set up this segmentation, you can of course choose the amount yourself to any figure you want. Once the segment is created, you can add it to your Campaign, Automation or Journey. 

Do step 1 first which is at the top of the document. Select the tag OrderCompleted or whatever you call that tag.

  1. Match "All"
  2. Click in "Historical data"
  3. Select "+ New summary"
  4. In the first field you select "Subtotal order", in the middle field "is greater than or equal to", and lastly you select the amount, in this case 500kr. 
  5. Save and sync

7. Segment on the number of purchases over a certain period of time


In this example, we will show how to segment the members who have shopped at least 5 times in the last year. This is a great way to segment your loyal customers. You can of course change the number of orders and the time span you want to look at.

Do step 1 first which is at the top of the document. Select the tag OrderCompleted or whatever you call that tag.

  1. Match "All"
  2. Click in "Historical data"
  3. Select "+ New number"
  4. In the first field, select "Order ID ", in the middle field "is greater than or equal to", and lastly select 5
  5. Select new rule. Order Date maximum number of days ago = 365
  6. Save and sync

8. Segment on combined amount from or to a date


In this example, we will show how to segment out the members who have spent a total of at least 2000SEK and a maximum of 3999SEK since 1/1 - 2024. This is a great way to segment out your loyal customers or segment out customers for possible bonus levels or discounts. You can of course change the amount as well as the time span you want to look at.

Do step 1 first which is at the top of the document. Select the tag OrderCompleted or whatever you call that tag.

  1. Match "All"
  2. Click in "Historical data"
  3. Select "+ New Summary"
  4. In the first field select "TotalPrice", in the middle field "is greater than or equal to", and lastly select "2000".
  5. Select "New summary". "TotalPrice" maximum "3999"
  6. Click "New Rule" and add Order Date is greater than or equal to 1/1 - 2024.
  7. Save and sync
